Excellence is a habit at Tennessee State University known for its world-famous (and Grammy-winning) Aristocrat Of Sound marching band, highly ranked cheerleading squad, nationally recognized research community, and coveted Carnegie R2 classification in the heart of Nashville, Tennessee.
Founded in 1912 as the Agricultural and Industrial State Normal School, the comprehensive land-grant university strives for excellence in programming, offerings, and community engagement while offering 77 majors and an engaging student life.
The 6th ranked public HBCU (Forbes) shines as a beacon of access, excellence, and possibility with two locations—the scenic 500-acre main campus in a residential neighborhood along the Cumberland River and the downtown Avon Williams campus near the center of Nashville’s business and government district.
In a history-making move, TSU started development on the first Mining Engineering Program at an HBCU and the only program in the state funded by a DOE grant to prepare a workforce for critical mineral production.
“We are deeply grateful to the Department of Energy for their strategic investment in Tennessee State University,” said Dr. Erik Schmeller, interim provost and VP for Academic Affairs.
“This collaboration not only expands academic opportunities for our students but also positions TSU at the forefront of vital workforce development in engineering.”
This year, Tennessee State University welcomed more than 1,600 freshmen this fall, nearly quadrupling last year’s class, making the storied institution the latest HBCU to experience an enrollment surge.
Notable TSU alumni include Oprah Winfrey, Xernona Clayton, Bobby Jones, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, Richard Dent, Wilma Rudolph, and more.
