On Saturday, David Wright’s No. 5 will be unveiled atop Citi Field with the relaxation of the array of retired Mets numbers — 14, 16, 17, 18, 24, 31, 36 and 41 — and when that occurs he’ll be the 89th athlete to be so honored among the 10 main skilled groups in New York (the Liberty have yet to bestow such an honor).
Setting apart Jackie Robinson (whose 42 is retired by all 30 main league baseball groups) and Bill Russell (equally honored by all 30 NBA groups), that’s rarefied New York air that Wright’s about to occupy. Here’s a look at the others who’ve acquired the same recognition.
1: Ray Flaherty, Giants; Ed Giacomin, Rangers; Billy Martin, Yankees.
2: Derek Jeter, Yankees; Brian Leetch, Rangers.
