As Puka Nacua seems back on a turbulent offseason, one that introduced headlines for all the mistaken causes and put a huge contract extension on maintain, it’s not the cash he might have lost or the embarrassment that weighs on him most.
It’s the feeling that he let down the individuals who love him.
So when it comes to redeeming himself – coming into a rehabilitation middle last March, staying dedicated to remedy, limiting who he permits in his circle, and making mandatory life-style modifications – the message it sends to the Rams about being a reliable long-term funding nearly comes second.
The one that issues most is the message he’s sending to his household.

“There have been some things that obviously happened this offseason that haven’t been the truest reflection of who I believe I am or how my mother raised me,” Nacua said Wednesday after a spirited Rams coaching camp apply at Loyola Marymount University.
“And there’s definitely been conversations with her to apologize.”
It was his mother’s response that caught. And it’s what’s fueling Nacua now.

Owning his errors to her wasn’t simple. Neither was confronting how far the influence reached. But in that second, she gave him something he wanted.
“For her to say that she supports me,” Nacua said.
That reinforcement, alongside with the powerful love from his brothers – “probably my biggest critics,” he calls them – has been liberating.
So has turning into a dad last November, which Nacua said “changed my life.”
All of it has stored him grounded. It’s sharpened his sense of duty, not just to his household, but to show to the Rams he can be trusted long run.
Which is why skipping camp was never an possibility, even with out a new deal and as he enters the last 12 months of his rookie contract.

Instead, Nacua is letting his off-field progress match his on-field manufacturing, and making his case that manner.
“Hopefully, if I continue doing my part, everything else will fall into place,” he said.
Four days into camp, it’s displaying.
Nacua arrived in high form, the product of cleaner habits. On the subject, he’s been uncoverable, successful with burst, pace, and precision against a loaded Rams protection. And when Matthew Stafford seems his manner, it’s been computerized.

That doesn’t imply the Rams are prepared to open the vault just yet.

“I’m trying to take accountability for the things I know I can change and continue to grow from,” Nacua said. “I want to become the best version of myself on and off the football field.”
That’s meant actual work. Regular classes with a therapist, who he says has helped him “find healthy spaces outside of football where I can communicate and process things.”
It’s also meant being more intentional about who he retains around him, and why.

“I’ve worked hard to establish routines, tighten my circle of trust and lean on the people closest to me,” Nacua said.
It doesn’t assure him anything when it comes to the contract he desires. And there’s still the risk the NFL fingers down self-discipline for what occurred off the subject.
But wherever that lands, he feels higher geared up to deal with it now.
And as he settles into a coaching camp he’s dominated early, Nacua seems fully at ease.
“Football is a safe place for me,” he said. “I love this game.”
Right now, that’s more than enough.
