On Wednesday, Netflix announced that its Untold documentary series would take on the Daejon Love case. He is the man that authorities allege scammed $1.3M from at least 26 victims by posing as a San Francisco 49ers player. Untold: Wide Deceiver is scheduled to come out in the near future. It’s Tudum description says it will focus on the accusers to “unpack the internet nickname and the far darker story it exposed.”
Love, 35, who is listed as a native of Sacramento was arrested by federal agents on Aug. 24 at the airport in Boise, Idaho, along with his 18-year-old accomplice, Taylor Jamie Chan. The two were charged with conspiracy to commit wire fraud and wire fraud.
Love met the women, who the FBI has identified as residents of California, Idaho, Washington and Oregon on dating apps, then persuaded them to hand over the money for investment opportunities. Aside from posing as an NFL player, with photos on social media showing him in Niners gear “training” for the season, he also told women he was a real estate investor.
“He was either a player, former player, a player on injured reserve, … but whatever name he was using, he’d put enough stuff into the media searches so it was the first thing that came up on people’s page,” Portland FBI Special Agent in Charge Doug Olson told the New York Times in September. “And it was not just the first thing that came up; it was like, there were multiple things in there that would confirm whatever he was telling those folks. … The sports thing was always a big part of it, because you have to have some source of initial income to be an investor.”
Since Love’s initial arrest, 35 more women have come forward, for a total of 61 alleged victims.
Netflix’s sports documentary series, Untold has covered the murder of former NFL quarterback Steve McNair, the 2004 “Malice at the Palace” brawl and Jake Paul’s controversial boxing career. This season, Vince Young, Olympic breakdancer Raygun and TV personality Mr. T were profiled.
There’s no director or release date yet for Wide Deceiver.
Love’s trial is scheduled for Dec. 15. He faces 20 years in prison and a $250, 000 fine. He has pleaded not guilty in the case.
