A better on a team sinking by the day usually doesn’t have much to do.
Edwin Díaz hadn’t pitched in six days before he got the closing 4 outs in Wednesday’s 7-3 win over the Brewers in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Citi Field.
For all their woes — and the Mets have a lot — Díaz isn’t one of them.
In his previous 22 video games, he has given up just one run on 10 hits and six walks, while placing out 31.
“I know I hadn’t pitched in a week, but I’ve learned how to keep my body ready,’’ Díaz said after picking up the save. “But it’s been hard not pitching much because I want to win and I know if I come in, we have a good chance to win the game. I haven’t had a chance to do that as much the last two weeks, but I know the guys are trying to get the ball to me.”
Díaz was half of a bullpen that tossed 4 ²/₃ shutout innings in the nightcap — including the high of the first by Huascar Brazobán as the opener.

Sean Manaea threw 60 pitches in his first rehab begin since a bone chip was found in his left elbow.
The southpaw went three-plus innings for Double-A Binghamton in which he allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits with a stroll and three strikeouts.
The next step for Manaea, who had beforehand made 4 rehab begins and had constructed up to 62 pitches before the setback, is unclear.

Originally he had been set to pitch Tuesday, which would have lined him up to throw Sunday, but Tuesday’s sport in Binghamton was rained out.
Monday is a common off-day in the minor leagues (and an off-day for the Mets).
“We have a decision there,” Mendoza said.
After his look, Manaea informed reporters he hoped his next sport would be in the majors.
The Mets are also awaiting the return of Kodai Senga from a proper hamstring pressure and the right-hander threw a bullpen session that went wonderful Wednesday.
“No news is good news,’’ Mendoza said.
Binghamton’s rainout also pushed back Jesse Winker’s timeline one day in his comeback from a proper indirect pressure.
The DH hit a homer Wednesday evening with Binghamton and is slated to play again Thursday on a back-to-back.
In his fifth rehab sport, Brooks Raley threw another scoreless inning, this time with Double-A Binghamton.
Coming back from Tommy John surgical procedure, the lefty has pitched 5 ²/₃ scoreless innings while letting up 4 hits, strolling none and placing out six.
The Mets called up righty Austin Warren as their twenty seventh man for the doubleheader.
The Mets honored Jose Quintana with a tribute video before the begin of the second sport.
Quintana waved and tipped his cap to followers who cheered him.
Juan Soto stole his tenth base of the season in his eighty fifth sport. Soto’s profession excessive for a season is 12.
