Source: Getty // Burgundy Season: Pictures Of Black Women In Wine, Oxblood And Plum
As the nation still basks in the glow of Black women winning on election night, we’re carrying that winning energy into our closets. In fashion, no color has won season after season quite like this one.
Burgundy, oxblood, deep red, or whichever way you choose to describe the hue, is one of those colors that oozes grown-woman status. Next to louder shades like orange, bright blue, and its cousin ruby red, this darker tone reads richer and more refined. Its sophistication comes from its subtlety.
Against melanin skin, the color becomes even more of a moment. It picks up the red undertones so many of us carry, warming our complexions into an all-over glow.
Styled with drama, burgundy makes a statement. Picture a sweeping trench coat, a head-to-toe look or strong fabrics like suede, leather and feathers. In smaller doses, it adds instant luxury through an oversize clutch, a pair of boots or a scarf.
When the leaves start falling and the sunsets turn darker, fashion lovers reach for this tone. Fall and winter are its natural seasons, though we’ve never needed a reason to wear it. For several years now, burgundy has had us in a chokehold. Our favorites have worn it on red carpets, at A-list events, and while strolling through the streets.
Teyana Taylor, Beyoncé And Megan Thee Stallion Keep Reaching For Burgundy
Megan Thee Stallion is the latest to wear the shade. At the CFDA Awards on Monday, Nov. 2, she wore a fashion-forward wine-red Kim Shui gown covered in beaded knots and rope details, with a high beaded collar and a cutout at the waist.

The color looked amazing against the rapper’s bombshell makeup and platinum blonde hair. Meg put it ALL on.
Teyana Taylor also had a memorable red carpet moment in oxblood this year.
At the BET Awards on June 28, she won Best Actress, Video Director of the Year, the first-ever Fashion Vanguard Award, and Icon of the Year. She accepted her trophies in a burgundy taffeta Stéphane Rolland couture gown with a sculpted corset, a full skirt, and a matching headpiece.

And a year earlier, she wore burgundy pinstripes to the Met Gala. Teyana keeps coming back to this shade, and we see why.
Beyoncé reached for burgundy on two birthdays in a row. After turning 44, she posted photos in a custom sheer dark red Dolce & Gabbana gown. For her 45th, she added pointed burgundy pumps and cranberry Jimmy Choo cat-eye sunglasses to a brown Roberto Cavalli set. One look went full drama, and the other was nostalgic and chic.
Black women make every color look expensive, but burgundy belongs to us this season. Keep swiping for some of our faves in wine, oxblood, and plum.
