When Aaron Rai saw his curling 68-foot putt disappear into the cup on the seventeenth inexperienced late Sunday afternoon at Aronimink Golf Club to lock down the 108th PGA Championship, the crowds packed around the gap went wild.
Rai, however, did not.
There were no fist pumps or guttural screams to the sky. There, in truth, were no emotional histrionics to have a good time the second — his second — in anyway.
As I watched the scene unfold, my preliminary thought was that Rai’s lack of response was due to him being in a state of shock — that the putt he wasn’t even making an attempt to make went in and that his skilled life was altering before his eyes.
